A background built on care and patience
Before founding Driving Matters, I spent decades managing residential, nursing, and dementia care homes. That background taught me the vital importance of remaining calm under pressure, being supportive, and maintaining honest, empathetic communication at all times. Having spent decades in this industry and with the backing and encouragement of my wife, I retrained to pursue my passion for teaching people to drive. Today, I bring those exact care-focused qualities into the car, ensuring every pupil feels safe, respected, and completely supported behind the wheel.
Welcome to Driving Matters. Based in Weston-super-Mare and serving learners across a 25-mile radius, I provide patient, tailored driving tuition designed around your individual learning style and pace.
What learning to drive with me is like
In my car, you will discover a tranquil, non-judgmental environment. There is never any shouting or raised voices. I firmly believe the only silly question is the one you do not ask. We treat every moment on the road as a learning opportunity, mistake and errors are embraced, discussed and used to learn from. Above all, I believe that if you are struggling to grasp a concept, it is the instructor who must adapt their teaching methods, not the pupil who is at fault.
Tuition tailored to your lifestyle
Whether you are a complete beginner, a nervous driver returning to the road, or balancing unpredictable shift work, tuition is shaped around your schedule. Comprehensive two-hour lessons run between 08:00 and 20:00, Monday to Friday, (Talk to me about Saturdays) across Weston-Super-Mare and surrounding towns. You do not need to have passed your theory test to get started, however in my experience some pupils have developed quicker with a robust knowledge of the highway code etc.
